When the Sydney Cove, a merchant ship, foundered off Preservation Island, Bass Straight, they sent a longboat to Port Jackson. The longboat was wrecked and its 17 crew trecked 400 miles to the infant colony. This was Europeans’ first recorded overland expedition in Australia.
