JUDAICA Philosophy History
“Dogma in Medieval Jewish Thought” brings together the greatest Jewish religious philosophers and compares their thoughts against the Rambam, the great eagle. No where else, with the exception of “With Perfect Faith”, by J. David Bleich, have I seen this comparison made in one book.
The book begins with the 13 principles as expounded by Maimonides, and then compares them with the thoughts of other Jewish philosophers through the 15th century. The biggest issues come down to symantics as the words pillars, foundations, axioms, etc., are used interchangeably by these religious Jews. But, one comes away thinking that all of the philosophers really agree with the Rambam in their heart, it’s just that they may not want to admit so to the public.”
