This is the story of a young girl who came to the Avon Valley in Western Australia to be married at the end of the nineteenth century. Life was no easy, but she was supported by her neighbours, whose kindness, at time of difficulty, was typical of country people. So this is a novel – but what a novel. It is thoroughly researched and at the same time, paints a vivid picture of how pioneers developed rural Western Australia. It also gives a graphic insight into what drove characters to achieve their dreams in the fledgling state. For it’s combined ease of reading and historical significance, it would make a welcome addition to the reading lists for students of Western Australia History, as well as its undoubted appeal to mainstream readers. Colin Price has once again written a novel which will, in some aspect respects, satisfy our urge to learn more about those people in the past who had something in common with ourselves. If you have read his previous novel ” They came to a country” you’ll meet with the descendants of some of those earlier characters, or hear about them and their exploits, particularly the Webb family of Broughton park, Trudy Graham. A well researched, readable tale of early settlement in the Beverly, York Area. The author has combined real historical events skilfully woven into an imagination story.
