Alfred Hillman arrived in Western Australia in 1831 and became Assistant Surveyor-General. He planned thr layout of the City of Perth. He surveyed the Albany Highway, walking with his party from Albany to Perth through the virgin bushland the whole way. He did most of the early surveying in the Albany district and in the Northam/York district.
