AUSTRALIAN MILITARY WWI ANZAC

11th Batalion, Fremantle 1915, 51st Battalion France 1916, 4th Division 1918. Leane’s Trench, Gallipoli; Battles of Messines, Somme on the Western Front.

Herbert Frank Charles ‘Bert’ Turner’s WWI diaries were sent home to his mother, Harriet, as each was filled. Kept safe by her, and then by his daughter, Leita Bell, until her death in 2018, the diaries were brought in by Lynley Ward, Bert’s grand niece. Painstakingly transcribed by Museum of Perth volunteers, it was soon apparent the contents was worthy of a book. Gaps where diaries are missing have been researched and filled by Matthew Willemsen, who also designed A Signaller’s Story.
