On March 19, 1907, Modesto Varischetti was trapped by water in a mine shaft at Bonnievale, in Western Australia. Nine days later he was rescued. This tells how the mine was flooded, how Modesto responded to the ordeal, and of the efforts to save him. It also tells of the relations between the Aussies and the Italians of the Goldfields.
