The Vision Splendid seeks to restore rural Australia to a central place in Australian history by showing how it has shaped Australian culture. It focuses on the culture of work and leisure and the changing conceptions of the Bush in the Australian mind from the late eighteenth century onwards. It maps, for the first time, the development of a set of cultural values and institutions in nineteenth-century rural Australia.
