This anthology brings together a wide-ranging selection of autobiography, poetry, fiction, plays, and essays. A chapter from Michael Somare’s autobiography, Sana; poems by Kama Kerpi and Hengenike Riyong interpreting Chimbu culture and religion; an unfinished story by the remarkable John Kasaipwalova written while he was in gaol; a transcribed tale by a traditional story-teller, Iriye Diaya; a group of plays, including a critical look by Nora-Vagi Brash at the new elite; essays by Bernard Narakobi, Kundapen Talyaga, Jacob Simet, John Waiko, and John Kasaipwalova, which explore questions of cultural identity – these and other contributions by Russell Soaba, John Kolia, Arthur Jawodimbari, Kumalau Tawali, and Albert Tom express the growing concern of Papua New Guineans with the problems arising in their own society and reveal the new ways in which they have begun to look at themselves and their communities.
