AUSTRALIANA BIOGRAPHY
Agnes Hodgson arrived in Barcelona from Sydney in December 1936, towards the start of the Spanish Civil War. She spent the next twelve months as a volunteer nurse at field hospitals in Grañén and Poleñino, close to the Aragón front. Her diary provides a fascinating first-hand account of the political turmoil on the ground and the horrifying impact of the war on her patients. Judith Keene’s detailed introduction includes an in-depth analysis of the political background to the war as well as its perception halfway across the world in Australia.
