Federation House, The : Australia’s Own Style

“Federation-style housing is a unique and fascinating period of Australia’s architectural history. Distinctive features of the Federation style are high-pitched roofs, forming a picturesque composition of great complexity, which incorporated gables, chimneys and verandahs. The timber woodwork of verandahs and archways and leadlights of casement windows reveal the influence of Art Nouveau, but with nationalistic overtones. Rusticated sandstone blocks form a rugged base tying the house to its landscaped garden.”- 127 p. : col. ill. ; 33 cm. #0921 (Gift inscription to fep, closed edge-tear in dustjacket.)

“This book describes the Australian Federation architectural style (1901-1915), its history and influences. I have such a house (built in 1910) so I had an interest. Federation style is called Australia’s own because it is positive, decorative, open, ornate with good quality craftsmanship (owing to the booming economy and positive outlook for Australia when it became a nation). The styles it draws upon are Queen Anne, Old English, American shingle, Art Nouveau and the English Arts and Crafts movement. I found the history interesting. The book also contains many example pictures and characteristic elements (such as the use of Art Nouveau stained glass windows) and renovation/restoration advice.”
