This is the story of three brothers from Putaruru who fought in the Second World War. The exploits of the Rolfe Brothers – Jim, Reg and Jack – cover between them most of the campaigns in which Kiwi soldiers fought. From Reg’s daring escape in an open fishing boat from Crete, where he was a prisoner of war, desert fighting in North Africa, including El Alamein; through to the war in Italy, including the battle for Cassino. The brothers and their comrades faced new experiences that were often exciting, frequently horrifying, but always – both in and out of action – life-changing. In a single stroke their lives and hopes for the future had been turned upside down, never to be the same again.
