The story of Australia’s agricultural and pastoral development has in general been broadly told. But in the telling of this story many developments and worthy pioneers have been either mentioned only in passing or entirely ignored. This is particularly true of the basic technological innovations in agriculture and especially the pastoral industry and its people who affected them: such innovations as the drafting gate, sheep-dip, shearing machine, windmill, woolpress, stripper and harvester and Australia’s unique working dogs. Pioneering Days also provides profiles of types of Australian rural life: in addition to such well-known figures as the shepherd, stockman and shearer, it looks at the contributions of the bush pastors, water diviners, the breeders of working dogs and the rural journalists who first recorded the achievements of Australia’s rural pioneers in the magnificent days that are done.
