Pilbara Project, The: Field Notes and Photographs Collected Over 2010

Throughout 2010, five artists toured the Pilbara, creating visual stories through photography
and film which capture the breadth of the region and its industry.

The field notes and images in this book represent the different Pilbara experiences and many people. Although they are dated, they are not chronologically ordered. The Pilbara sings its own song. This book seeks to capture some of its notes. Aboriginal interest. BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

In February 2011 FORM presented the first Pilbara Project exhibition. This exhibition opened on consecutive nights in both FORM Gallery in Perth and the Courthouse Gallery in Port Hedland, and featured new photography and film by renowned artists Les Walkling, Tony Hewitt, Christian Fletcher, Michael Fletcher and Peter Eastway. Curated by William L. Fox, Director of the Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, the exhibition considers the collision and interconnection between the land, industry and cultures of the Pilbara.

The work depicts a set of visual narratives and individual stories from these creative minds, offering a new and different way of seeing and knowing this place. The exhibition considers industry, so crucial to this region, our state and nation, but also acknowledges that industry is just one layer within the complex strata of the Pilbara’s identity and history.

The Pilbara Project: Field Notes and Photographs Collected over 2010, is a limited edition, 216 page hardback book which explores the finer grains of the Pilbara via a rich medley of stunning photographs and diaristic field notes. Featuring an essay by William L. Fox, Director, Centre for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, the book reveals the real Pilbara through the lens of some of Australia’s finest emerging and established photographers.
