AUSTRALIAN MILITARY WORLD WAR I The history of the 31st Battalion AIF in World War I, from its formation in Australia in 1915, to its disbandment in 1919. The 31st Battalion was raised in Australia and then deployed to Egypt. The 31st Battalion served on the Western Front as part of the 8th Brigade of the 5th Division. The 31st served with great valour in the disastrous battle of Fromelles after which it was rebuilt. Service followed in the trenches of Houplines, Flers, Bapaume and Lagnicourt. The 31st moved to Belgium and fought in the Third Battle of Ypres. A magnificent attack was carried out at Polygon Wood, which culminated with Paddy Bugden being awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. Service in the trenches opposite Warneton followed during the bitter winter of 1917. The 31st Battalion moved back to France during the German Spring Offensive, with service on the Somme, followed by the battle of Amiens, Villers-Carbonnel and the Hindenburg Line. Author Neville Browning has included Nominal Rolls, Honour Roll, Awards, Nominal Index and, unusually for the First AIF unit history, a detailed list of Prisoners of War and their fate. 464 pages : illustrations, maps, portraits ; 26 cm. #120423 (Ownership label on fpd.)
